 ABOUT THE MEETING:

The field of High Performance Computing (HPC) is one of the foundational topics for the future of computer systems.  From embedded systems to the tablet/desktop to high end systems, parallelism will be an integral part of the future.  While, the parallel hardware is already here; the effective exploitation of it is not.  Of course some subareas are already effectively exploiting parallelism.  Some examples of these areas are: scientific computing, request level/embarrassingly parallel computing, multi-tasking, and data parallelism.  However, for the most part, the insertion of parallelism into many computational tasks remains elusive.  There are many factors complicating the exploitation of parallelism which presents us with many opportunities and challenges to overcome.  This talk will review the state of the art in parallel computing and review some of the programming challenges and strategies for harnessing parallel computing.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Philip A. Wilsey is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computing Systems at the University of Cincinnati.  He is an experimentalist working in parallel and distributed systems, embedded system, and point-of-care medical devices.
