ABOUT THE MEETING: Our nation spends a fortune on its military, preparing for traditional warfighting in traditional war zones. However, there is an emerging threat to the United States’ national interests that goes beyond the realm of traditional warfare, and that threat extends into space. Our entire national infrastructure depends upon availability of the resources we have in space – from GPS satellites navigating our air traffic, to Wideband Global Satcom satellites providing protected communications to our warfighters in Afghanistan and the Middle East. Our country’s national interests are intimately tied to the availability and affordability of Space assets to enable our national security. This presentation discusses the role of L3 Space and Sensors Technology Center (SSTC)’s role in defending our nation and providing affordable, rapid access to launch assets and satellite communications.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS: Dr. Robert Hayes is the Director of Advanced Programs at L3 Space Avionics in Mason, Ohio. He leads a team of principle investigators in developing the new technologies that L3 is inserting into its space portfolio. His team’s current research interests include navigation processing for launch vehicles, low cost processing options for satellites, space sensing technologies for overhead persistent infrared (OPIR) missions for missile defense, and microwave technologies to enable high bandwidth communications between space assets and ground assets.

Mr. Gordon Samuels is a Senior Principle Engineer at L3 Intelligent EO Solutions (IES) in Mason, Ohio. IES features a broad array of products ranging from baseball-sized, standard definition IR imagers to ultra large format systems with up to 36 Mpix of resolution. They are fielded on armored vehicles, tanks, fighter aircraft, UAVs, ships, submarine periscopes, foot soldiers, and satellites. IR sensors have emerged as a critical element in both offensive and defensive military and paramilitary systems and will play an increasingly important role in building and maintaining our space borne infrastructure. Mr. Samuels has a BSEE from the University of Cincinnati and an MSEE from the University of Texas at Arlington and has been an IEEE member since 1985..

LOCATION: Raffel’s is located at 10160 Reading Road, south of Glendale-Milford Road on the east side of Reading. Take I-75 to the Glendale-Milford Rd. Exit, go east on Glendale-Milford Road approximately ¾ of a mile to Reading Rd. and turn right on Reading.

Non-members and unregistered member cost is $20 cash at the door. Reservations close at 11:59 PM on Sunday March 26th, 2019. DINNER RESERVATION CANCELLATION POLICY An email to prior to the close of reservations is required to properly cancel your reservation. All Reservations must be made by March 26, 2019 WALK-INS (those without reservations): You are welcome to attend this meeting and/or enjoy the dinner even if you did not register in advance. Walk-ins pay a higher $20 dinner fee. Raffel’s determines our cost based on the number of plates used; if you choose to have dinner, please pay the fee if you eat even if you arrive late or didn’t pre-register.

PE CREDITS: Depending on the subject matter, attendance at IEEE Cincinnati Section Meetings now qualifies the attendee for Professional Development Hours towards renewal of Professional Engineers Licenses. Required documentation will be available following the meeting if qualified! The Section Meetings also provide a great opportunity to network with fellow engineers in the area.
